Supporting older people living with dementia

  • Read in Less than a minute

Receiving a dementia diagnosis can be scary both for the person diagnosed and their families, but a diagnosis does not mean giving up things that people enjoy doing. Sure, it may mean small changes have to be made to help with everyday living and to give some control back to all concerned. That’s where Mercy Health can help.

The Mercy Health Dementia Advisory Service supports people living with dementia, their families and carers in the southern metropolitan region of Melbourne, including Kingston, Bayside, Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. The service includes a home visit by a Mercy Health Home Care Services dementia advisor, who will explain the symptoms and different stages of dementia and develop a plan tailored to individual needs. This plan will support people to live active, meaningful lives and provide strategies for managing complex and challenging behaviours. We can also assist with navigating the aged care service environment to help your clients utilise appropriate dementia-specific support services. Some people may be eligible for up to 18 hours of respite. If one of your clients could use some advice about dementia, ask them to call our Care Advisory Service on 1300 478 776.

Did you know that the Mornington Peninsula has the highest rate of dementia of any local government area in Victoria? Our Dementia Advisory Service recently received some editorial coverage in the Mornington News to raise awareness of dementia and the support service available.
